[Review] Turtle Beach Elite Pro 2 + SuperAmp for PS4 and PS4 Pro

Over recent years, I have come to value sound quality and comfort above all else in a headset. Sound quality is especially important for gaming, as well as for music. That’s why I was excited to review Turtle Beach’s Elite Pro 2 + SuperAmp for PS4 and PS4 Pro (“PS4 Elite Pro 2”) over-ear headset.

It’s worth noting that there is also an Elite Pro 2 + SuperAmp for Xbox One. There are only a couple differences between the Xbox One and PS4 versions, but I will touch on those a little later.

The PS4 Elite Pro 2 has a myriad of great features. The headband is metal, making it sturdy, which is a huge plus for me, as I’m especially hard on stuff. The ear cushions are magnetic, and feature Turtle Beach’s patented ProSpecs Glasses Relief System, which allows for easy adjustment to accommodate gamers who wear glasses. The speakers are Turtle Beach’s 50mm Nanoclear speakers. The faceplates on the sides are also magnetic and swappable. You can buy additional plates from Turtle Beach’s website.

The included SuperAmp is powered by USB, has an optical port, and uses DTS Headphone:X Surround Sound Technology to create a unique 7.1 channel soundstage, giving you one hell of a gaming experience. It has a volume dial, and you can adjust the audio levels and other settings to your liking by using Turtle Beach’s Audio Hub app, available for both Android and iOS. I will point out that the SuperAmp is not part of the headset itself. The headset uses a standard 3.5mm audio plug, and that wire has an inline mic mute/unmute switch.

On the Xbox One version, the SuperAmp does not have an optical port, and uses Windows Sonic to create surround sound, as to DTS Headphone:X on the PS4 version. The other difference is the color — the Xbox One version is white, while the PS4 one is black.

Due to the fact that the PS4 Elite Pro 2 has a 3.5mm audio plug, it can be plugged into any device that has a 3.5mm audio output jack, like, an MP3 player, phone, or computer, as well as the Switch. Setting up the PS4 Elite Pro 2 is very simple, but rather than simply regurgitating the info, I will direct you to the official set up video guide below. Due to the fact that I'm unable to verbally communicate, I have no use for the mic, which plugs into the smaller hole on the corner of the left earcup. That plug, unfortunately, is not the standard 3.5mm size, which I need for my phone setup. However, the mics on the Recon 60P and the XO Three are 3.5mm.

The Turtle Beach website states: “Designed in collaboration with leading esports teams including OpTic Gaming and Splyce, the Elite Pro 2 + SuperAmp Pro Performance Gaming Audio System provides ultimate headset performance through athlete-tuned speakers, a pro gaming mic, and long-lasting comfort.” I can definitely say that the headset is comfortable after extended use. To me, the audio is unbelievably great, both with and without the SuperAmp. The sound quality is so good that the PS4 Elite Pro 2 has become my go-to headset for gaming, regardless of console.

There is only really one thing I don’t care for about the PS4 Elite Pro 2, and that is the weight of the headset itself. I mean, there is definitely some heft to it, but it is by no means heavy to the point that it hurts your neck after a while. This is by far my only complaint about the PS4 Elite Pro 2. Also, the price tag may be an issue to some people, but I’ll explain why in a minute

Would I recommend the Turtle Beach Elite Pro 2 + SuperAmp for PS4 and PS4 Pro? Yes, I definitely would, as the sound quality is fantastic. Just be sure to save up your money for it. My reasoning for that comment. Is the price tag. With an MSRP of $249.99 USD, it will cost you a pretty penny. You can purchase the Turtle Beach’s Elite Pro 2 + SuperAmp for PS4 and PS4 Pro, as well as the Xbox One version, on Amazon, other retailers, and from the official Turtle Beach site. Note: if you buy it via the Turtle Beach site, you also have the option to pay for it with three payments of $84. So, that might be more feasible for some, rather than paying the entire $249.99 at one time.
